Silence and the Wind

(A Novelette About Isolation)

Eight-year-old Luke McKlister is no stranger to solitude.  He has been living--mostly alone--in a beat-up mobile home in the middle of the Arizona desert ever since his mother disappeared.  His father, too, is usually somewhere else.  When his father does return--sometimes late at night, sometimes very early in the morning--Luke is both relieved and terrified.  While waiting for his father's return one particular afternoon, however, Luke's solitude is broken by two unrelated and totally unexpected events.  The first is the arrival of a mangy dog looking for food..  The second is the arrival of a social worker who is there simply because she made a wrong turn somewhere and lost her way.  Both of these events will end up changing Luke's life ... forever.
